One of the most common and costly mistakes when purchasing a kiln is selecting the wrong voltage. In North America, the two most common high-power options are 208V and 240V. While the outlets may look identical, the kiln components are designed specifically for one voltage type.
Important: This is not a preference choice. Your building’s electrical supply determines which kiln voltage you need.
240V is the standard power supply found in most single-family homes. If your kiln will be installed in a garage, workshop, or basement, you will typically have access to 240V power.
208V is commonly found in commercial and institutional buildings such as schools, hospitals, apartment complexes, and industrial facilities. It is supplied through two legs of a three-phase electrical system.
Since 208V and 240V often use the same NEMA outlet styles, it is possible to accidentally connect the wrong kiln to the available power source.
A 240V kiln connected to a 208V circuit receives approximately 25% less power than it was designed for.

If you move a kiln from a home studio to a commercial space, or from a commercial location to a home studio, you may not need to replace the entire kiln. However, you may need the correct voltage-rated heating elements so the kiln operates safely and reaches the required temperatures.
