Heating Element Maintenance
Heating elements are the core of your kiln’s performance. Over time, elements become brittle and their electrical resistance increases, which can lead to slower firing times and reduced temperature performance.
- The glow test: Fire the kiln empty until the elements reach a dull red glow. While wearing IR-rated safety glasses, inspect through the peepholes. Elements should glow evenly throughout the kiln. Dark areas or uneven heating may indicate worn or damaged coils.
- The paper test: If an area is not heating properly, place a small piece of paper in the element groove while the kiln is off. Turn the kiln on briefly. If the paper does not smolder, the circuit, element, or relay may require inspection.
- Multimeter resistance check: With the kiln unplugged, measure the resistance (ohms) of each circuit. If resistance is more than 10% higher than the manufacturer’s specification, the elements may need replacement.
- Re-seating elements: If elements move out of their grooves, heat the kiln to a dull red glow, turn off the power, and carefully press the coils back into position using needle-nose pliers.
Firebrick and Lid Care
Firebricks provide insulation and retain heat, but they are fragile and require proper care to maintain kiln efficiency.
- Vacuum grooves: Use a soft brush attachment to clean element grooves and the kiln floor every few firings. Removing debris helps prevent overheating and contamination.
- Repair minor cracks: Small hairline cracks are normal. If sections become loose, use manufacturer-approved high-temperature cement for repairs.
- Lid and band tightening: Regularly check and tighten metal bands around kiln sections and the lid to keep bricks secure as the kiln expands and contracts during operation.
Kiln Furniture: Shelves and Posts
Maintaining kiln furniture protects the kiln floor and helps keep your loads stable during firing.
- Kiln wash: Apply a fresh layer of kiln wash to the top surface of shelves to prevent glaze drips from permanently bonding to the shelf.
- Remove glaze drips: Remove glaze drips promptly and reapply kiln wash. Old glaze deposits can damage shelves during future firings.
- Rotate shelves: Periodically rotate shelves to help minimize warping and uneven wear over time.
Electrical and Hardware Safety
Small electrical issues can become serious problems under continuous high-temperature conditions. Regular inspections help identify problems before failures occur.
- Plug and receptacle inspection: Periodically unplug the kiln and inspect the plug prongs. Dark marks, discoloration, or heat damage can indicate overheating. Cleaning or replacing damaged components can help reduce resistance and heat buildup.
- Relay health: Listen during firing cycles. Regular clicking as relays switch on and off is normal. Buzzing, inconsistent operation, or complete silence may indicate a relay problem.
- Thermocouple inspection: Replace the thermocouple if the tip appears thin, cracked, or heavily corroded, as inaccurate temperature readings can affect firing results.
