Kiln Maintenance Checklist
Use the maintenance instructions for your exact kiln model and controller. Keep its model number, serial number and manual with your firing records so you can identify the right service information.
Checks before loading
For routine visual checks and cleaning, let the kiln cool completely and follow the manufacturer's instructions for disconnecting its electrical supply. Switching the controller off is not a substitute for electrical isolation.
- Look for loose brick fragments, debris or glaze contamination inside the kiln.
- Check shelves and posts for damage and stable support before loading.
- Follow the kiln and shelf manufacturers' cleaning and kiln-wash instructions. Do not assume every shelf material needs the same treatment.
- Report displaced elements, damaged wiring, a damaged plug or receptacle, or an insecure lid before another firing.
Keep a maintenance record
Record the date, firing number, observed problem, controller message and any work performed. Include photographs taken when it is safe to do so. Changes in firing time are useful information for support, but do not identify a faulty component by themselves.
Arrange model-specific servicing
Ask the manufacturer or a qualified kiln technician about element testing, re-seating or replacement. Do not use this checklist as a procedure for handling hot elements, opening electrical boxes or testing an energised circuit. Have a qualified electrician assess supply wiring and damaged outlets.
Use the manufacturer's service intervals and replacement criteria. A single resistance threshold, relay sound or fixed number of firings is not a universal diagnosis for every kiln.
