How to Prepare Your Space for a Kiln
Preparing your installation area is one of the most important steps for safe kiln operation and long equipment life. Before your kiln arrives, make sure your space meets the recommended requirements for flooring, clearance, ventilation, housekeeping, and environmental protection.

Flooring Requirements
Kilns are heavy pieces of equipment that produce significant radiant heat. Your floor must be stable, level, load-bearing, and made from noncombustible materials.

Recommended materials: Concrete is the ideal surface. Tile with cement grout, brick, stone, and other noncombustible materials are also suitable.

Surfaces to avoid: Do not install a kiln on carpet, wood, linoleum, vinyl, or rubber flooring. These materials can melt, discolor, or create a fire hazard.

Protective barrier when needed: If installation over wood or synthetic flooring is unavoidable, use an approved fire-resistant barrier such as cement board rated for stove applications. The barrier should extend at least 24 inches beyond the kiln on all sides.

Leveling matters: A stable, level surface helps reduce stress on the kiln structure and prevents pieces from shifting during firing.
Wall and Ceiling Clearances
Proper clearance allows heat to escape, improves airflow, and helps ventilation systems work effectively.

Wall clearance: Many manufacturers recommend at least 12 inches from walls. Larger studio and industrial kilns may require 18 inches of clearance from all vertical surfaces.

Ceiling clearance: Maintain at least 24 inches of open space between the top of the kiln and the ceiling.

Overhead obstructions: Never place a kiln below cabinets, shelves, hanging materials, plastic items, or other overhead objects.

Safety and Housekeeping
The kiln area should be treated as a controlled workspace. Keep it clean, organized, and free from unnecessary hazards.

Clear zone: Maintain a 3-foot area around the kiln that is free from combustible materials such as curtains, cardboard, paper, spray cans, paint, and gasoline.

Separate room if possible: A dedicated kiln room or isolated workspace is preferred, away from living areas and general activity zones.

Fire safety: Keep an appropriate fire extinguisher nearby and use warning signs when the kiln is operating.

Dust control: Damp mop regularly and avoid dry sweeping or aggressive vacuuming that can spread fine clay dust into the air.
The Kiln Stand
Operate your kiln only on the manufacturer-approved metal stand and ensure it is stable and properly positioned.

Stability: Center the kiln on the stand carefully. An uneven or off-center setup can create instability and may affect controller and safety functions.

Leveling the stand: If the floor is uneven, use metal shims under the stand legs rather than placing anything between the kiln and stand.

Cord protection: Position the power cord away from hot kiln surfaces. Excessive heat can damage the insulation and create electrical risks.
Environmental Considerations
Kilns can operate in garages and unheated spaces, but extreme environmental conditions may affect electronics, performance, and safety.
