Heat Work vs Temperature
A kitchen oven is considered finished once it reaches the set temperature. A kiln works differently. The clay and glaze must receive the correct amount of heat over time to complete the necessary chemical changes.
- Pyrometric cones: Small ceramic cones designed to bend and melt at specific heat work levels.
- How the scale works: The cone scale starts at 022, continues through 01, and then moves from 1 through 10.
- Important: Think of the zero as a negative value. Cone 06 is much cooler than Cone 6.
The Three Primary Firing Ranges

Why Power Matters: The Headroom Rule
A kiln’s power rating directly affects firing reliability and heating element performance. Having additional capacity generally reduces strain during firing.
- Element wear: As heating elements age, their resistance increases and their ability to deliver power decreases. A kiln operating at its maximum rating frequently may struggle to maintain temperatures over time.
- The Cone 10 advantage: If you regularly fire to Cone 6, a Cone 10-rated kiln can reach that temperature more comfortably, which may improve firing consistency and extend element life.
- Voltage fluctuations: Electrical supply can vary during peak usage periods. A higher-powered kiln is more likely to maintain target temperatures when voltage drops occur.
Technical Requirements by Range
Low Fire and Test Kilns
Some small kilns can operate on standard 120V household power, but these models typically have a capacity of less than 1 cubic foot and are designed for small projects or testing.
Mid to High Fire Kilns
Most mid and high-fire kilns require 240V or 208V power with a dedicated circuit, commonly ranging between 30 and 60 amps.
Cone 10 firing requires stronger heating elements and consistent power delivery to maintain high temperatures through longer firing cycles.
